Bali Book
In January 2020, I was fortunate enough to be awarded funding by Northern Bridge Doctoral Training Consortium to undertake a research trip to Bali, Indonesia. The funding application was made in recognition of an internal discomfort I had experienced within my tattooing practice, regarding the adoption of imagery from non-western cultures into western tattooing, without sufficient understanding of the source material. The trip allowed me to work with art historian Bruce Carpenter in the Sanur region of Bali, where I had access to non-public resources and insights regarding Balinese art, culture, spirituality, and how these factors relate. The trip also allowed visits to numerous galleries and exhibits of classical Balinese art, gaining a basic understanding of the context behind the imagery.
Bali Book is the result of the research trip. The book provides a series of images inspired by the trip that are available to be tattooed, alongside content surrounding Balinese imagery/culture, and reflections based on my experiences. Printed copies of the book are available on request, or in (free) digital PDF format on request.
